Currie Cup Live

Every Winter and Spring, usually starting in June and running all the way through till October, is the Currie Cup, which is the domestic top tier level rugby competition in South Africa, also called the ABSA Currie Cup, after the title sponsor. The teams that makes up the Currie Cup are from each region or province in South Africa, and they also compete in Super Rugby international events. The Currie Cup dates all the way back to 1889, making it one of the oldest rugby competitions anywhere in the world. The gold trophy, which was carried over from the first overseas team to tour in South Africa, donated by Sir Donald Currie, who owned the shipping line that brought them. The Currie Cup teams are split into two different divisions, with the Premier Division composed of eight teams which vie for the Currie Cup Trophy. There are six teams that make up the second tier, the Currie Cup first division, and they play for promotion to the top tier of the competition.

The teams that make up the Currie Cup competition include the Leopards, Pumas and Natal Sharks, all from the Northern Cape as well as Eastern Cape teams The Border Bulldogs and Eastern Province Kings. Others include The Free State Cheetahs, Griffons, Boland Cavailers, Western Province and Eagles, as well as the Falcons, Golden Lions and Blue Bulls.
