The IRB Junior World Championship originally had sixteen national teams, but is now down to twelve. the reduction in large part due to financial reasons, and the event took the place of two other junior rugby competitions, the Under 19 and Under 21 World Championships. The Junior World Championship is the top tier of rugby in this competition, and there is a second their called the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy that has eight teams. That series started in 2008 as well, with Chile as the host nation.

New Zealand has won every single competition since this event began, taking the 2008, 2009 and 2010 titles. Runner up in 2008 and 2009 was England, and last year Australia came in second.
