The ITM Cup is the yearly domestic rugby competition at the professional level for the nation of New Zealand. It started in 2006 and it started with fourteen teams. Air New Zealand was the title sponsor, from the very first season of the ITM Cup until 2009, called the Air New Zealand Cup until 2009 when the Independent Timber Merchants became the title sponsor. Starting in 2009, the ITM Cup saw a different format than any other years. They will play a pre-season and then there are thirteen weeks of round robin tournaments, which each team facing each other team one time. After everything is done, the top four teams will move onto the semifinals, and the top two teams from the semi-finals will move onto a competition called the Grand Final. The teams get to the top by earning points. They get four points for a win, two for a draw and one point for getting four tries. They also get a bonus point if they lose by seven points or less.

The teams in the ITM Cup include Auckland captained by Daniel Braid, Bay of Plenty coached by Sean Horan, Canterbury, Couties Manakau, Hawkes Bay, Manawatu and NorthHarbour as well as Bryce Woodward's team Northland, Otago captained by Alando Soakai and Southland, Taranaki, Tasman, Waikato captained by Nathan White and Wellington, being coached by Andre Bell.
