The Mandela Challenge Plate is an annual rugby competition that is played between just two nations, named after South Africa president Nelson Mandela and played between South Africa and Australia. The match was original held every two years but is now held every year with the first match happening in 2000 with Australia taking the first match at Colonial Stadium with a final score of 44-23. South Africa took the second match, which was played in Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Since 2006, the two nations contest the competition over a series of three matches.

Last year, Australia won two matches in the Mandela Challenge Plate, with South Africa only taking one match. In 2009 South African won two and Australia won just one match. The three years prior to that Australia won it every time, with the match in 2007 only consisting of two matches. South Africa won in 2002 and 2005 and Australia won the first match.
