Ryan Tandy has been fired from the Canterbury Bulldogs because of a betting scandal. The sacking came on Friday, at the hands of the club, saying that his position was no longer tenable. Tandy was called before a board on Wednesday with allegations that he had placed a bet on a game against the Gold Coast Titans in which he played back in June of 2010. He was actually arrested over the incident by police, for providing false information back in the beginning of February over the same betting scandal that ended his contract.
Detectives from the Racing and Casino Investigation Unit of the State Crime Command investigated Ryan Tandy after charges that one of this matches had suspicious punting activity, specifically that he gave the other team the option to begin scoring with a penalty goal. The other team apparently did not take the bait and instead scored a try. At the time, Tandy denied that he had given away the point intentionally, in an interview with the Herald. Around eighty people were interviewed by police as part of the investigation which they called a very serious matter.
At the hearing, Tandy decided not to answer the clubs questions about what happened based upon legal advice that he received, said CEO Todd Greenberg of the Bulldogs. Tandy pleaded not guilty to four different charges of providing false information to police, but the club said that their actions against Tandy were not related to the charges, saying that Tandy was presumed innocent until proven guilty. The police continue to investigate large bets that were placed on the match last August against the North Queensland Cowboys.
